Snowmobile Safari from Rovaniemi: Day Ride, Ice Fishing or Night Ride?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Most of a snowmobile safari is not riding. The booking pages for Rovaniemi quote two to six hours, and the riding time inside that is usually around one hour. The rest is the briefing, getting kitted out, the transfer and a stop for a hot drink. Before you compare prices, check how much of the time is actually spent on the machine, and read the licence and excess rules, because those are where visitors get caught out.

Who may drive

The rules are the same across operators with small differences:

  • Driver: at least 18 years old, with a driving licence valid in Finland. One night-tour page asks for a physical class B card and does not accept a provisional licence or a photo of it; one daytime operator asks for the physical card as well.
  • Sharing: two adults share one snowmobile and swap drivers. Riding alone is an extra charge on the listings that offer it.
  • Children: they ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. Above a stated height, 150 cm on one tour and 140 cm on another, they may sit behind an adult at the adult price. The night tour does not allow children if the outside temperature falls below −20 °C, and the day tours exclude babies and small children, under 3, under 4 or under 6 depending on the operator.
  • Not suitable for: people with back problems and pregnant women are named on several pages.

The excess nobody mentions in the headline

If you damage the machine, the driver is liable for an excess. The figures on the pages differ: €990 per accident on the two-hour safari and on the fishing tour, €950 on the night tour. Each operator sells an optional insurance on the spot, €20 or €15, which brings the excess down to €150. It has to be bought before the tour starts. Another operator we read gives €1,000, reducible to €300 for €20.

So the line to look for on the booking page is the one beginning “the driver is liable for …”. If you would not want to pay up to about €1,000 after a slide into a tree, buy the insurance, and ask your own travel insurance whether it already covers rental vehicles of this kind.

Which one fits

Your first safari, with a hotel pickup. The combo-options safari picks you up within 10 km of the centre and is the cheapest from-price of the five. Ice fishing or a visit to the wildlife park can be added.

A smaller group and private trails. The new-snowmobile safari keeps to five snowmobiles per guide and drives on private forest and tundra trails. There are no hotel pickups: you meet at the operator’s office in the centre and take a coach to the base.

A full day. The ice-fishing tour with lunch is the longest and best rated, 4.8 from 924 reviews, with two to three hours of driving along frozen rivers and a campfire soup. It costs €189, so it is a day out rather than an activity.

Night. The campfire safari rides in the dark with a break to look for the aurora. The page says sightings are never guaranteed and that the operator does not cancel for weather, so check the forecast a couple of days ahead. If the lights are the aim, a dedicated aurora tour with a refund is a better bet.

Starting at the village. Some safaris start and end opposite Santa Claus Village, with free parking, which suits a family visit; see the Santa Claus Village guide.

What we would book

For most visitors: the new-snowmobile safari, 4.7 from 2,288 reviews, three hours, with groups kept small. If you need a pickup at your hotel, take the combo-options safari at €101.15.
