Are Rovaniemi Northern Lights Tours Really Guaranteed? What the Refund Covers

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer: nobody can guarantee the lights, so the “guarantee” is a refund. On the booking pages of the guaranteed Rovaniemi tours it is paid out if the guide’s camera captures no aurora, not if you fail to see one with your own eyes. That is a narrower promise than the headline suggests, and it still protects you well, because the operators drive far to avoid that outcome.

What the wording actually says

Read the small print of the guaranteed tours below and the pattern is the same. The most-reviewed one, Arctic GM’s guaranteed aurora tour, says that any aurora captured by camera counts as a successful sighting, and that intensity, colour, size and duration are not guaranteed. It also warns that the lights often look brighter in photos than to the naked eye. BookLapland’s version is phrased the same way: no aurora captured on camera, 100% refund.

Two details matter more than the percentage:

  • Some tours pay less than everything. The premium small-group hunt refunds 75% if the tour runs, no aurora is visible and no aurora photos can be captured.
  • Some tours promise nothing. The shorter evening trip with a barbecue option states that sightings are subject to weather and solar activity and are not guaranteed.

The refund is not the main protection

A guarantee that has to be paid out is the unusual case. The operators say they run only when there is a realistic chance: the Arctic GM tour does not start if conditions are unfavourable and you then get a full refund, and the premium hunt may be cancelled by mid-afternoon if cloud covers every option within 350 km. What you are really buying is route flexibility.

That flexibility has a price in time. Guaranteed tours last six to eight hours or more because the guides follow clear skies rather than a fixed route. One of the two most-reviewed tours drives up to 200 km or more, the other crosses into Sweden when needed, so bring a passport or ID card; the Arctic GM page lists one in its “what to bring” section. The shorter evening trip, 2.5 to 3.5 hours, leaves less time and distance to get away from cloud.

Choosing between them

Group size. The coach option of the Arctic GM tour typically takes four to six hours, the small group six to ten. The operator itself recommends the small group for flexibility and a better chance of success. The from-price is the lowest option on the page, so look at the small-group price for your date before comparing it with the 8-person hunts.

Language. English is the guaranteed language on the two most-reviewed tours. German, French, Spanish and Italian guides can be requested after booking, subject to availability and not guaranteed.

Photos. All five include or offer photos; they arrive by email or download link some days later, two to three days at the slowest, so do not plan around having them on the night.

Refund clarity. The review summary on the premium listing notes that some travellers wanted clearer information on what happens when no lights appear. Read the “know before you go” section before you pay, and keep your booking confirmation.

What we would book

For most visitors: the Arctic GM tour in its small-group option. It has the most reviews of the five, a 4.7 rating, a refund that covers the whole price and the operator’s own recommendation for the small group.

If you want the least risk of a long night with nothing in the sky, the 8-person hunt at €129 is built for exactly that. If you only have an evening and cannot spare eight hours, take the shorter trip and treat the lights as a bonus.

More choices by tour type are on the northern lights tours page. Prices change by date and group size, so the figure on the booking page is the one that counts.
