Sauna and Spa in Rovaniemi: Private Sauna, Forest Spa or Ice Plunge Evening?

The cheapest of these five sauna options is also one of the best rated, and it is a private cabin. Five offers cover three different ideas: a private cabin by the river, a spa with a restaurant, and an evening with a dinner at a lake. They differ in what is included, in who may enter, and in whether anyone collects you.

The private river sauna
You get a renovated sauna built in 1958 as a blacksmith’s, on the Kemijoki River at Pajatie 11. It is booked as a private group, with a towel, clogs, a hairdryer and a dry toilet. The itinerary shows a meeting point at the address and no pickup, so plan how you get there and back. The host explains how to use the sauna and the river plunge safely. The page suggests a beer afterwards, and says that on a clear night the lights may show. Neither is promised.
The forest spa
The spa at Invisible Forest Lodge is adults only, from 14, according to the page. The €95 ticket includes one hour of access, hot pools, a reserved place in the sauna lounge, bathrobe, towel and slippers, and a three-course lunch with vegan options. A swimsuit is not included and can be bought on the spot, and luggage storage is available. The €130 version states two hours of access with round trip transport, and drinks are paid for at the bar. A reviewer found it busy and not as relaxing as expected, and noted that the sauna and hot tubs are close to the restaurant.
The evenings with dinner
The lake evening has pickup from 15 hotels, a sauna of 10 to 15 minutes at a time, then the choice of cold water or a snow pile, followed by a salmon dinner in a wooden cottage. The aurora is only mentioned for evening departures from the end of October to mid-March, and with the words “if lucky”. Swimwear and tips are not included. The €195 version is a private group with a jacuzzi, and the sauna part lasts 1.5 hours.
Before you go
- Ice plunge: if you have heart, circulation or blood pressure problems, ask your doctor before you plunge into cold water.
- Swimwear: the spa page says a swimsuit is not included and can be bought on the spot, and the lake evening lists the swimsuit among the items not included.
- Children: the spa is not open to under-14s. Check the age line on each page for the others.
What we would book
For most visitors: the private river sauna is the best value, if you do not mind getting there yourself. If you want lunch, hot pools and a bathrobe, the Invisible Forest Spa is the safer choice, and the lake evening is the one that includes pickup and dinner.
