Korouoma Canyon from Rovaniemi: The Frozen Waterfalls Day Trip Compared
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
Korouoma is a full day, not an excursion. The canyon lies in Posio, roughly 100 km from Rovaniemi; the tours quote 1.5 hours each way by van, and the hike with the frozen waterfalls fits into the four hours or so that remain. The canyon itself is, according to one tour’s booking page, a nature reserve about 30 km long and up to 130 m deep. In winter its side streams freeze into ice falls, which is what you are there for.

Why the prices differ so much
The cheapest and the most expensive tours are both small-group, seven-hour days, and one costs more than double the other. The booking pages do not explain the gap, so compare what is listed, not the price. The €145 tour offers pickup from a long list of hotels; the €104 one picks up within 7 km of Rovaniemi and includes snow grips for your shoes; the €123.25 one adds a professional photographer and edited photos afterwards; the €69.52 one has the most reviews and the highest rating of the four.
How hard is it?
The hike is on snow, partly on slopes, and the booking pages do not describe it as a stroll. The €69.52 tour asks for moderate fitness and says winter conditions can make the trail more challenging. The photography tour says the trail at Korouoma can be demanding. A reviewer of the €104 tour mentions ropes on the steeper, icy parts and the guide’s advice to trust the crampons. Thermal overalls are included on the first tour, and the €104 tour lists snow grips for your shoes.
Several booking pages list who the day is not suitable for: children under 8 on two of them, people with mobility impairments, and on the cheapest tour a long list of medical conditions, pregnancy and low fitness. These are the operator’s own conditions, so confirm yours with them before you pay. Wheelchair users are named as not suitable on that page.
Driving yourself
Self-driving to Korouoma is possible and the guided tours are still the safer choice in midwinter. It is about 100 km each way on winter roads, daylight is short, and the hike itself is easier with a guide who knows the trail. If you want your own car anyway, for the freedom to leave early or to combine the canyon with other stops, you can compare rental cars for Rovaniemi. Ask the provider what winter equipment is included and what the excess is, rather than assuming.
What we would book
For most visitors: the €69.52 Korouoma hike. It has the most reviews, 1,665, the best rating of the four at 4.9, a small group and the lowest price. It is also the one with the strictest suitability list, so read that before you book.
If photographs are the point, the photographer tour is the only one of the four that promises edited pictures. If you are staying outside the centre, the tour with pickup from many hotels is the easier fit.
