Reindeer Sleigh Rides near Rovaniemi: Farm Visit, Short Ride or Longer Tour?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
The ride length is the whole product. Reindeer sleigh rides near Rovaniemi look alike on the booking pages, but the sleigh part is anything from 500 m to about 2.5 km, and the price follows the programme around it rather than the distance. Decide how much of the experience you want to be riding and how much standing at a fence, and the choice mostly makes itself.
Five tours side by side
| Tour | The ride | Programme | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reindeer experience with sleigh ride | 500 m | 2.5 hours, 20-minute drive to the farm, talk by a herder | €87 | 4.2 (1,584) |
| 2 km reindeer sled ride through the forest | 2–2.5 km, about 40 minutes | 3 hours, fire, feeding, photos | €179 | 4.8 (275) |
| Local reindeer farm visit with sleigh ride | 2 km | 3 hours, 35-minute minibus drive, photographer | €185 | 4.7 (345) |
| Husky and reindeer experience | 500 m reindeer plus 500 m shared husky ride | 3.5 hours | €163 | 4.3 (554) |
| Reindeer, huskies and Santa Claus Village | 500 m reindeer plus 500 m husky | 6 hours with village free time | €188 | 4.6 (2,417) |
The short ride is a farm visit with a ride in it
On the 500 m tours the sleigh is a few minutes. What you get for the money is the visit: a herder explains reindeer herding, you meet the animals, and you finish with hot juice and biscuits. Winter clothes are provided. A reviewer on the cheapest tour’s page writes that feeding the reindeer afterwards was lovely and wishes the sleigh ride had gone on longer.
The two 500 m tours that add huskies are the same idea, with a second animal. The six-hour day adds a hot salmon soup lunch and free time in the village; the farm part is the same kind of visit as on the short tours. Its booking page says you earn a “reindeer sledge driver’s license” for the ride.
The longer ride is a different outing
The two 2 km tours are quieter. On the 2 km forest tour you sit wrapped in a blanket on a reindeer hide, and guides lead the reindeer caravan so there is nothing to do but ride, for about 40 minutes. Afterwards there is a fire, hot drinks and sweet treats, and you can feed the reindeer and take photos. It runs from a private farm and the pickup points listed are three hotels around Santa Claus Village, so check that yours is covered.
The other 2 km tour is built around photographs. A photographer comes along and sends edited pictures a few days later, groups are small, and you travel 35 minutes by minibus to the farm. The same page says touching the animals is not allowed, while feeding is part of the visit.
Practical points
Not suitable for. The listings name different groups: mobility impairments on the cheapest tour, pregnant women and wheelchair users on the 2 km forest tour. Confirm accessibility with the operator before you travel.
With children. None of the five descriptions states a minimum age, so ask the operator before you book for a baby or toddler. The 2 km ride takes about 40 minutes, which is a long time outdoors for a small child even in the clothing provided; the 500 m ride is the gentler start.
The reviews. The cheapest tour has by far the most reviews, 1,584, and the lowest rating of the five at 4.2. The 4.8 of the 2 km forest tour rests on 275 reviews, so it is a smaller sample.
What we would book
For most visitors: the 2 km forest tour, if the price of €179 suits you. It is the one where the ride counts, and it has the highest rating of the five.
If you only want to meet reindeer and see a farm, the 500 m tour at €87 is the reasonable choice. All reindeer tours are on the reindeer sleigh page; for the village around them, read the Santa Claus Village guide.
