Husky Sled Rides in Rovaniemi: Drive Yourself or Ride Along?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
Decide first whether you want to drive. Husky rides near Rovaniemi come in two kinds: you sit in the sled while a musher drives, or you stand on the runners at the back and drive your own team. The distance comes second, and it is the part that decides what you pay for. Rides on the booking pages range from about half a kilometre to 20 km.
How far is how long?
Distance is the figure people compare, so here is what the listings say it means in minutes:
- A 2.5 km passenger ride takes roughly 7 to 12 minutes.
- A 4 to 5 km self-drive takes about 30 minutes, and one operator gives 20 to 30 minutes for 5 km.
- The rest of the programme is the briefing, meeting the dogs, a hot drink and the transfer. Time spent on the runners is a smaller part of a 3.5-hour trip.
The kilometre figure is therefore the better guide to the ride, and the duration on the page is the better guide to your evening.

What driving actually asks of you
On the self-drive tours you receive a briefing, then you steer and brake standing on the back of the sled. The Apukka page is blunt about it: the guides do not drive for you, so you need enough fitness and body control to be the musher. Two adults share a team on another listing, where children sit in the sleigh.
Several booking pages list who the ride is not suitable for, and the lists differ from tour to tour. Pregnant women, people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users are named on the Apukka page; the multi-distance safari excludes children under 2; another tour excludes babies under 1. Because operators set their own limits, read the “not suitable for” section of the exact tour you pick.
With children
The passenger rides are the ones that work for small children, because nobody has to drive. The multi-distance safari asks that children under 12 be accompanied by an adult paying the full price, which is a cost to include in a family budget. On the self-drive listing that describes it, two adults drive each team and children ride in the sleigh, so check how seats are counted for them at booking.
Season and no-shows
One operator states that sled rides run from mid-November to mid-April and that in April a cart on wheels replaces the sled because of the weather. A late-season booking is therefore worth a message to the operator. One page also states that a missed meeting time is not refunded, and the multi-distance safari needs at least two participants on weekdays and Saturdays, four on Sundays and public holidays.
The dogs
Apukka says its husky activities hold a Nordic animal-welfare certification and ranks the dogs’ welfare first. Other operators say less, and that is not evidence either way. Ask how the dogs are kept and how often they run; a good operator answers in a sentence.
What we would book
For most visitors who want to drive: the 6 km Apukka tour, from €219 per person, rated 4.6 from 1,569 reviews. The distance is long enough to feel like a drive and not a photo stop.
If you only want a taste, or you travel with a toddler, take the 30-minute ride in Santa Claus Village at €63. The farm visit with a short passenger ride has the lowest rating of the five, 3.9, so read recent reviews before you book it.
All husky tours are on the husky safari page, and the village in the Santa Claus Village guide.
