Do You Need a Rental Car in Rovaniemi? An Honest Answer

Updated October 14, 2026 · 5 min read

A compact car parked beside a snow-covered road between dark spruce trees

Most visitors staying in central Rovaniemi for two or three nights do not need a rental car. The centre is compact, Santa Claus Village has bus connections, and organised excursions normally collect guests from designated hotels or meeting points. Hire a car when the freedom to reach trailheads, cabins or several out-of-town stops matters more than avoiding winter driving. A family based outside the centre may gain much more from one than a couple staying beside Lordi’s Square.

What works without a car

Within the centre, walking is usually the useful default: restaurants, shops and the riverfront are close together. Local buses are Rovaniemi’s only public transport, and line 8 serves Santa Claus Village. Airport buses also run via the village, although their frequency changes with the season and day; check the current timetable rather than building a tight departure around an old screenshot.

The major winter activities are also designed for visitors without cars. Aurora hunts, husky safaris, snowmobile trips and Korouoma excursions commonly state a meeting point or a pickup arrangement on their booking pages. That makes a tour simpler than hiring a vehicle merely to leave it parked during the activity.

Ranua is possible without driving too. Long-distance coaches serve the wildlife park, but the timetable determines how long you can stay. A guided trip costs more, yet bundles transport and admission and removes the connection risk. This is precisely where “no car” remains practical but less flexible.

When a car earns its place

A car starts to make sense if your cabin is beyond the bus network, you want to combine groceries with rural stops, or you are staying long enough to make several independent day trips. It is also useful for photographers who want to leave before a coach group and for families carrying winter clothing, snacks and a pushchair.

That freedom has a winter price. Darkness lasts for much of the day, compacted snow changes braking distances, and a rural parking area may offer fewer services than a city car park. Finland requires winter tyres from November through March when weather or road conditions demand them. Do not assume every rental includes the exact equipment you want: read the supplier terms and confirm tyres, child seats and any engine-heater instructions before collection.

Who should skip it

Skip the car if nobody in the party is comfortable driving on snow and ice. A vehicle also adds little to a short Christmas break built around the centre, Santa Claus Village and pre-booked tours. For a solo traveller, paying for excursions only on the days you leave town can be cheaper and less stressful than keeping a car parked.

Parents should compare convenience with the collection details. A child seat must be reserved with the rental company, while a tour operator may have different age and restraint rules. Neither should be assumed. Ask before paying, especially when travelling with an infant.

The clear answer

For a central stay of up to three nights, choose walking, bus services and tours. For a cabin stay or several self-directed outings, compare a rental car for Rovaniemi and select one only after checking its winter equipment and collection terms. If Korouoma is your only remote destination, the guided excursion is usually the cleaner decision; owning the timetable for several remote days is what makes the car worthwhile.
